Yreka Union High School District Overview.

Welcome to the Yreka Union High School District Website!

Located in Siskiyou County and within site of Mount Shasta, the Siskiyou, Cascade and Coastal mountain ranges and including the Klamath and Shasta Rivers, Yreka High School is located in a beautiful and geographically diverse region of Northern California.

The district is comprised of a comprehensive four-year high school, and two alternative settings, Discovery High School, and the the Yreka Community Day School.

Yreka High School

Yreka High School is a public comprehensive four-year high school with an enrollment of approximately 650 students.  Yreka serves nine feeder elementary schools including the communities of Big Springs, Delphic, Gazelle, Grenada, Hornbrook, Klamath River, Montague, Willow Creek and Yreka.  The boundaries of the student attendance area of Yreka incorporate 1,200 square miles of predominantly rural, agricultural area geographically isolated from large metropolitan areas.  Agriculture, government and tourism are the primary components of the local economy.

Though much of the area is comprised of families with moderate incomes, education remains a high priority.  Yreka High School offers a full complement of courses preparing students for college, vocational careers and the work force.  Advanced Placement courses prepare students for the rigor of four year universities.  ROP and Career Technical Education courses offer students skills and expertise in agriculture, woodworking, health occupations, careers with children, business, computer drafting and photography.  Many students involve themsolves with the extensive visual and performing arts program including music, art, dance and theater.  The athletic department encourages students in a wide variety of sports teams promoting good character, sportsmanship, and athletic ability.

Discovery High School

Approximately two-thirds of Discovery High School students have been referred to the school by Yreka High School, with the remaining students entering from schools out of the area.  The student population fluctuates between 60 and 80 students, ranging between 14 and 19 years old.  Many of the students were unsuccessful (academically and/or socially) at tradional schools and were referred to Discovery High School for academic remediation and/or behavior modification. Approximately 8-20 students graduate each year from DHS, others pass the GED or CHSPE, and some transfer to Yreka High School after reaching personal academic goals.  The DHS staff provides a more personalized environment than traditional high schools, with a more flexible schedule, and intensive academic counseling services.

Discovery High School's curriculum is individualized.  Students work at their own pace, classrooms are multi-graded, and open entry/exit is standard practice throughout the school.  In addition to traditional subjects, Discovery hosts the District's Regional Occupation Program (ROP) in Natural Resources as well as partnerships with local employers and agencies.  The wide choice of subject matter and programs as well as the flexibility built into the curriculum, make Discovery a unique school to acquire one's education.

YUHSD Community Day School

The YUHSD Community Day School is open only to students who are expelled, on probation, or mandated by the SARB to attend.  It is not an open entry/exit program.  This is a highly restricted program that meets Monday-Friday 8:00 to 3:00pm.  Students enrolled in the YUHSD CDS work through the District's graduation requirements at their own pace.  They may apply for re-admittance to other District Programs at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, through the Alternative Education Principal, except in situations of expulsion where the YUHSD Board of Trustees must be petitioned for re-admittance.
